Andy Rooney Retiring from 60 Minutes

After 33 years of being featured on CBS’ 60 Minutes, the 92-year-old is retiring. Rooney will announce on Sunday’s broadcast that it will be his last regular appearance on the program.

“There’s nobody like Andy and there never will be,” Jeff Fager, chairman of CBS News and 60 Minutes’executive producer said in a statement. “He’ll hate hearing this, but he’s an American original. His contributions to 60 Minutes are immeasurable.”

NEWS: Another TV legend announces his retirement

Fager added that although Rooney might not have a regular role on the program, “he will always have the ability to speak his mind on 60 Minuteswhen the urge hits him.”

Rooney began his run on 60 Minutes in July 1978, and on Sunday he’ll present his 1097th original essay. In addition to his contributions to the show, he’s written 16 books and written and produced several primetime specials for CBS.
